By 19, he was hitchhiking through the Algerian Revolution, and at 20, he was part of the team that made the first ascent of Denali’s North Wall—a climb so perilous it has never been repeated. His thirst for adventure led him to hitchhike around the world at 22, working as a correspondent in every war zone he encountered.
For 15 years, John served as a US Foreign Service Officer, finding himself in the thick of the 1969 revolution in Libya and the Vietnam War. These experiences, filled with danger and excitement, initially fueled his adventurous spirit but later sparked a deeper search for meaning and purpose.
A Life of Impact
John’s journey took a transformative turn when he began to focus on peace-building and leadership. At the United Nations, he risked his career to support peace initiatives in South Africa and Cuba. His life-changing experiences include fighting for survival in a lifeboat during a typhoon in the Gulf of Alaska after his ship caught fire and sank.
For the past 40 years, John has been a leading figure in the Giraffe Heroes Project, a global movement inspiring individuals to tackle public problems and equipping them with the tools to succeed. His work as a peace-builder has contributed to ending apartheid in South Africa, preventing a major strike in Canada, saving the Everglades, and finding environmental solutions in the Pacific Northwest.
